What is Conservative Management?
Majority of people when faced with dialysis, go on to live full and productive lives. However, for some people, conservative management is an option. This allows for the focus to be on quality of life and symptom control.
Some people feel they have lived long enough and have had a full life
Others may have many medical limitations and do not want to pursue dialysis or transplant
Some may have a terminal illness and don’t want to prolong the process

Family and Team Involvement with the Conservative Management option
It is important to discuss this option with your family and your medical team.
Advance Care Planning allows for the patient, family members, and providers to reflect upon the patient’s goals and values to help inform current and future medical care plans, including, end-of-life care.
Speak to your doctor and request a family meeting to discuss the advanced care planning.
The doctor and/or social worker at your unit are available to explore this option if you have already begun dialysis and are considering discontinuation of treatment.
