Clinical / Special Research
Clinical research
Every clinical fellow has 5 months of clinical research/chart review/elective time during the two years to complete a clinical research project. By January of the first fellowship year, the fellow is expected to choose a nephrology senior staff mentor and a research project. It
is expected that at least one full-length manuscript will be submitted before completing the two-year Fellowship Program. Previous research experience is not a requirement.
Special Research
The Nephrology Division has developed a special interest in renal diabetic pathophysiology and is externally funded in this activity. Funding for a two-year basic science fellowship in this area is available for the appropriate individual. A one-year clinical experience supplements the basic science work making the fellow board eligible in nephrology. Also by special arrangement a basic science experience is available in our National Institutes of Health funded renal vascular and hypertensive laboratory. Complementing this experience is a one-year clinical experience. (Please note that to be nephrology board eligible, all fellows must have as a minimum two years of a _ day/week clinic in general nephrology.) Recent graduates of this program have successfully pursued careers in academic medicine.
